Stem length is the centre-to-centre distance from the steerer clamp to the handlebar clamp, measured in millimetres. Typical ranges: mountain bike 35–80mm, gravel 70–100mm, road 80–120mm. A shorter stem quickens the steering; a longer one stretches your reach and calms it down.
Why Bike Stem Length Matters
Comfort
The right length sets a natural riding posture — fewer aches, longer days in the saddle. Too much reach loads your hands and shoulders on every ride; too little folds you up over the front wheel with your knees close to the bars.
Numb palms and a sore neck after a long day are usually a reach problem before they are a grip or saddle problem, which is why a stem is often the cheapest fix for a bike that has never felt quite right.
Handling
Stem length changes how fast the bike answers a steering input. Too long feels sluggish; too short feels twitchy; the right length feels predictable enough that you stop noticing it.
It also moves your body weight. A shorter stem pulls you back off the front wheel, which is what makes steep ground feel manageable — and it is exactly why enduro and downhill bikes run the shortest stems on the market.
Efficiency
Proper reach improves weight distribution and power transfer, especially on climbs. Get it too short and the front wheel goes light or wanders on steep pitches because there is not enough weight over it.
Get it too long and you end up propping up your upper body with your arms instead of driving the pedals — tiring on exactly the sort of long climb where you want the position working for you.

How to Measure Bike Stem Length
Stem length is always quoted centre-to-centre: from the middle of the steerer clamp (the end that grips the fork) to the middle of the handlebar clamp. You do not need to remove the stem from the bike to measure it.

What you need
A steel ruler or a caliper, and something straight to sight along. A tape measure works but is easy to read off by a couple of millimetres, which matters when the increments you are choosing between are 10mm apart.
Step by step
- Turn the bars straight and look down at the stem from above, so you are seeing its true length rather than a foreshortened view.
- Find the centre of the steerer clamp. On a round clamp that is the middle of the circle, not the front or rear edge.
- Find the centre of the handlebar clamp the same way.
- Measure between those two points and round to the nearest 5mm. Stems are made in fixed increments, so a reading of 47mm means you are almost certainly looking at a 45 or a 50.
Check the markings first
Most stems have the length laser-etched or printed on the side or underside — often as a bare number like “50” next to the bar clamp. If it is legible, that is your answer, and your measurement is just a sanity check.
Two mistakes to avoid
Measuring edge to edge. Front edge of one clamp to front edge of the other gives a number that looks plausible but is wrong by several millimetres.
Measuring along the body on an angled stem. A stem with rise sits at an angle to the ground, but its quoted length is still the straight centre-to-centre distance along the stem’s own axis — not the horizontal distance to the floor, and not the length of the outer curve.
Bike Stem Sizes: The Other Three Numbers
Length is the number riders change most, but a stem has to match three other dimensions before it will fit at all. When someone asks about “stem size” rather than stem length, this is usually what they mean.

How to Choose the Right Stem Length
Three things narrow it down: what kind of bike you are on, what you ride on it, and whether your proportions match the frame. Work through them in that order.
By bike type
Modern mountain bike frames have long reach figures built in, which is why MTB stems have got dramatically shorter over the past decade while road stems have not moved. If you are cross-shopping across disciplines, these are the ranges you will see:

By terrain and riding style
Within your bike’s range, terrain decides where you sit. The steeper and rougher the trail, the shorter the stem: it keeps your weight behind the front axle and lets you correct a line faster when the ground changes under you.
Sustained seated climbing pulls the other way. A longer stem keeps enough weight over the front wheel to stop it wandering on a steep fire road, and puts your hips in a better position to push against. Cross-country and endurance riders trade away some descending confidence for exactly that.
If you ride a bit of everything, take the middle of your bike type’s range. A stem is cheap enough that trying a second one is a reasonable way to settle the argument.

Does stem length depend on your height?
Not directly — and this is the single most common misunderstanding about stem sizing. Stem length is set by your frame’s reach, which the manufacturer has already sized for you. A tall rider on a correctly sized XL frame may run exactly the same 50mm stem as a shorter rider on a small.
Height only enters the picture when your proportions do not match the frame — a long torso, short arms, or sitting between two frame sizes. In those cases the stem is the adjustment, and 10mm is the usual step: roughly 10mm of extra reach, and a noticeably calmer front end. Beyond about 20mm away from the stock length, you are usually fighting the frame rather than fitting it, and the answer is a different frame size.

After fitting a new stem, take a test ride: check comfort, steering response and climbing efficiency. Adjust until the stem disappears beneath you — if anything still feels off, change it before it becomes pain.

How long should my bike stem be?
Start from what the bike came with — the manufacturer chose it to suit the frame’s reach. On a modern trail mountain bike that is usually 40–60mm; on a cross-country bike 60–80mm; on a road bike 80–120mm. Change it only to solve a specific problem with fit or handling, and change it 10mm at a time.
What is the standard bike stem size?
There is no single standard length, but the clamp sizes are standardised: a 28.6mm (1-1/8") steerer clamp on almost every modern bike, and either a 31.8mm or 35mm handlebar clamp. Those two numbers determine whether a stem physically fits; length is the part you choose.
Is a 90mm stem too long?
For a modern trail or enduro mountain bike, yes — that is well beyond the 40–60mm most current frames are designed around, and it will make the steering feel slow and put too much weight over the front wheel. For a cross-country, gravel or road bike, 90mm is completely normal.
How do you measure stem length without removing the stem?
You don’t need to remove it. Sight straight down from above with the bars square, and measure from the centre of the steerer clamp to the centre of the bar clamp with a steel ruler. Removing the stem gives a slightly easier measurement, not a more accurate one.
Does a longer stem give the same reach as a bigger frame?
No. A longer stem adds reach at the bars but leaves the wheelbase, front centre and your weight distribution unchanged, so the bike handles differently rather than simply fitting like the next size up. Use the stem for fine-tuning within a frame size, not to bridge a gap between two.
