Yes. One side is an SPD-compatible clip mechanism, the other is a flat platform with 8 traction pins, so you can clip in for a trail ride and then ride to work in trainers without swapping pedals. That is what makes the Clast work for commuting and touring as well as trail riding.

The Clast releases at 18 degrees and gives 5 degrees of float. Float is how far your heel can swing side to side while you are still clipped in — it stops your knee being locked into one exact position. Release angle is how far you twist your heel before the cleat lets go; 18 degrees is a normal, predictable amount rather than a hair trigger.

The Clast is the versatile one: a clip mechanism on one side, a flat platform with pins on the other, an ADC10 die-cast body, a 73 x 92mm platform and 385g a pair. The Tactic is the cross-country pedal — a forged AL6061 body, a much smaller 54 x 44mm platform, 325g a pair and adjustable binding tension. Both use SPD-compatible cleats with the same 18 degree release and 5 degrees of float. Take the Clast if you want to ride in ordinary shoes some of the time; take the Tactic if you are always clipped in and counting grams.

Single-sided SPD pedals put the clip mechanism on one face only — on the Clast, the other face is a flat platform with pins, so you can ride it in any shoe. Double-sided SPD pedals carry a mechanism on both faces, so you can clip in without flipping the pedal first; if that is what you want, the Ripper2 comes with single or double clip sides. The Clast trades instant entry for the freedom to ride flat.
