Solo Narrow-Wide Chainring

BCD is the diameter of the circle your chainring bolts sit on. Count the bolt holes: 104 BCD is four bolts spaced evenly, and measuring from the centre of one bolt straight across to the one opposite gives you 104mm. It is the most widely used four-bolt pattern on older and mid-range cranks. If your four bolts are visibly unevenly spaced you are on Shimano's asymmetric pattern and want the Solo 96; if the ring attaches straight to the crank arm with no spider at all, you need a direct mount ring — the Solo DX for SRAM or the Solo DS for Shimano.

30T, 32T, 34T or 36T — and the choice is gearing, not fit, since all four bolt to the same 104 BCD spider. A smaller ring makes climbing easier and costs you top-end speed; a bigger one does the reverse. 32T is the usual starting point for trail riding on a wide-range cassette, 30T is the one to take if your rides are steep or your cassette range is narrow, and 34T or 36T suit flatter ground or an XC pace.

Usually not, and that is the whole point of the tooth profile: alternating narrow and wide teeth fill the chain's inner and outer links properly, so the chain grips the ring instead of working loose. Paired with a clutch derailleur, most trail riders never drop a chain. Where a guide still earns its place is downhill, bike park and racing, where the one run in a hundred is the one that matters — the Zippa Lite ISCG05 adds that insurance for 30g.

9 to 12 speed, all of them. The narrow-wide profile is cut to suit that whole span, so the ring does not have to match your drivetrain's speed count — an 11-speed chain and a 12-speed chain both seat correctly on it. What does need matching is the crank interface and your chainline, which is where buying decisions actually go wrong.

You do not choose it — it comes with the size, 2mm on the 30T and 1.6mm on the rest. Offset is how far the teeth sit outboard of the bolt circle, and it is what puts the chain in the right place across the cassette. On a 1x drivetrain you want the chain running as straight as possible through the middle of the block, and the stepped bolt holes hold the ring accurately at that position. Fit it and the chainline lands where a 1x setup wants it.
