Zippa Lite ES Chain Guide

Only on an e-bike with a Shimano EP8, E8000 or E7000 motor. Unlike the rest of the Zippa range, this one does not bolt to the frame at all — it mounts to the motor's own fixing points, so there is no ISCG05 or BSA question to answer. Check the motor casing rather than the bike brand, since the same frame is often sold with different motors depending on the year and the market.

Because a motor occupies the space a chain guide would normally bolt to. On an ordinary frame the guide picks up ISCG05 tabs or clamps around the bottom bracket shell; on a Shimano e-bike neither is there, and the chain line sits differently as well. So this version is built around the motor's mounting points instead, which is also why it will not fit a non-assisted bike no matter how the numbers look.

32T through 38T. A guide has to follow the curve of the ring closely to do its job, so going outside that range leaves it either fouling the teeth or sitting too far away to catch anything. Every size of our Solo ES chainring falls inside it, as do the rings most Shimano e-bikes ship with.

For gentle riding, honestly, yes — a narrow-wide ring on its own holds a chain well. An e-bike changes the sums though. The motor puts far more torque through the chain than legs alone, the bike is heavier, and you carry more speed into rough ground, so the chain gets slapped around harder and more often. At 30g the guide costs you almost nothing to have, and a dropped chain on a climb with a motor pulling is a worse afternoon than on an ordinary bike.

It is a bolt-on job, but the setting matters more than the bolting. The guide needs to sit close to the ring without touching it — near enough that the chain cannot climb out, far enough that nothing rubs when the chain is at the extremes of the cassette. Turn the cranks by hand through the full range of gears before you ride it and listen. The manual has the clearances.
